Program Elements

Housing and Community

MTP Community

You will live at Nyingma Institute, Dharma College, or Mangalam Centers.

Most participants are housed in shared rooms at Nyingma Institute. Please expect one roommate and shared bathrooms and showers.

Vegetarian meals will be provided; students may share some of the cooking. There will be regular house jobs that you are responsible for, and a basic code of conduct you must agree to follow.

Community Living

Living in community is a vital part of the MTP. We will develop group projects and opportunities to work and relax together. We do not emphasize social interaction, but we encourage you to share and make connections with your fellow students.

Full participation in the program requires about 60 hours a week, which includes group meditation, classes and workshops and about 10-20 hours a week for private study and practice.

You will take three classes a week, which are open to MTP students only.

In addition to classes, you will meet with senior members of the community to work out a study program.

studyYou will have the opportunity to take optional classes, but the schedule is already full, so this may not be advisable.

A reading room with facilities for showing videos is available to all students.

There will be a daily morning meditation for all participants, Saturday workshops about once a month, and two short retreats at the beginning and end of the program.

You will spend about 30-35 hours a week on average doing work that supports the activity of the Nyingma Mandala of Organizations. If you have special skills relevant to the work we do, we will do our best to make use of them. You will need to be flexible about the work you do, as it may shift during the course of the program. Hours may vary as well.

Skillful Means

We emphasize the practice of Skillful Means, an approach that uses the challenges of work to deepen your personal understanding and challenge limiting patterns. Daily readings presented at group meetings will give you points to practice during the day, and there will be regular opportunities to review how the practice is going.

Art Projects

The Community has always emphasized creating sacred art, including prayer flags, tsa-tsas (images made of fired clay), and paintings.

There will be regular opportunities to participate in such projects.
